Separate recall from selection
Retrieve broadly enough to find the relevant material, then select the evidence that directly supports the question. These are related but different jobs.
Reduce duplicate evidence
Repeated passages can consume the budget without improving the answer. Prefer complementary evidence that covers the distinct parts of the request.
Keep the test realistic
Evaluate on the documents and questions your product actually receives. Synthetic examples alone may hide version conflicts and long-document edge cases.
